Many proponents of Quality Control (QC) claim that samples are not representative and
therefore advocate 100% inspection. At the same time, when the discussion shifts to Quality
Assurance (QA), they argue that control must be performed on a sufficiently large sample for it
to be representative. From a statistical standpoint, however, the larger the sample, the lower the
variability of the estimator, because the standard error decreases as sample size increases.
To illustrate this, a simple simulator can show how the standard error of the mean shrinks as the
number of observations grows. This leads to an important point raised by experienced problemsolvers: if a process has drifted, then it was not capable of meeting the requirements to begin
with. Under this view, a relatively small sample (often fewer than 30 parts) is enough to obtain a
meaningful estimate of the standard error.
In practice, a small, recent sample is used to evaluate short-term capability with indicators such
as Cpk and X̄ charts. For long-term behavior, representative historical data are used to assess
performance through Ppk and IMR (Individuals and Moving Range) charts. In the end, a process
is either capable or it is not. However, a process can be capable by design yet still perform
poorly if it is not properly maintained, controlled, or kept centered over time.
